Silent Auction and Mid Summer Party |
CONSERVANCY HOSTS RIVER OF THE YEAR EVENT
The Lackawaxen River Conservancy presented a gala Midsummer Party and Silent Auction at Settler’s Inn in Hawley July 31. Over sixty participants showed their support for Conservancy’s River of the Year fundraising event.
Gordon Wildermuth, Conservancy member and party attendee responded, “What a great evening! A real class act! It was a wonderful evening and everyone had a super time.” Auction items included works of art, items and gift certificates donated from local businesses and a unique offering of designer fabrics.

TLRC president Win Olsen emphasized the river’s role as a precious and natural resource to the region. “The funds raised through the event will enable the Conservancy to expand its public outreach and educational activities. We want to encourage area residents, local businesses, and public entities to preserve the Lackawaxen and pr
otect it from activities that might degrade it. Most important is to enjoy the river and have fun.”
The Lackawaxen River Conservancy’s next River of the Year event, A tour of Wayne County Dams along the Lackawaxen, will be held on August 21. Please see www.lackawaxenriver.org or call 570-685-8875 for more information.

WOW!
What an statement, “The little river that does!” Around every bend, lies an oasis of history and rapidly changing river conditions. With the weather holding just enough, our first paddling day on the Lackawaxen Sojourn made us truly aware of what a great big “little” river we have right in our backyard. Tours of the Dorflinger Glass Museum walking trail, Lock House and White Mills Firehouse are just a few of the fun excursions packed into our 3 day Event. Close to 60 people attended the Sojourn lunch and River of the Year Celebration on paddling day 2. Our 20 or so participants continued on to enjoy the lower swift-water sections of the this wonderfully winding water escape, lead by the National Canoe Safety Patrol (NCSP) who provided safety, and support and guidance to paddlers wanting assistance. Our first nights programming provided by the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, National Park Service. Amazing on water programming was giving by Pike County Conservation Districts, Watershed Specialist Nike Spinelli.
Please check out the www.riveroftheyear.com/sojourngallery for pictures of this great success due to partnership and patience of the entire Sojourn/ROY Steering Committee.
“Let’s do it again”_ Chris Foland a sojourn participant said.
“So what time next year, is this happening.” a land owner and on looker asked.
“I think we will be buying canoes or kayaks”, Frederica Leighton the River of the Year Chair person said during a her heartfelt welcome, which included some many of the River of the Year accomplishments as well as a request to all stake holders of this region to protect this treasure for future generations.
Rich Caridi, a Pike County Commissioner, thanked the Sojourners and the Lackawaxen River Conservancy for bringing awareness to this pristine treasure, stating “It’s much easier to protect our resources then to remediate after the damage is done.”
Congratulations Lackawaxen River “2010 PA River of the Year”.
